Millennials are people that were born between 1977 and 2000. These people are just now entering the workforce or have been in the workforce for a few years. They are a tech-savvy bunch of young adults and teenagers who have grown up with the changes in media. Most millennials had cell phones and computers at a young age. They have a high amount of confidence and they need more advanced marketing tactics. Here are some tips for marketing to millennials.
Support a Cause
One unique thing about millennials that is different from previous generations is that they really want companies to support a cause. You will find that if you are giving a portion of your proceeds to a charity, you will get a lot more business than if you aren’t. This doesn’t mean every sale should go to a charity, but having special events where you donate a percentage of your profits will definitely earn you some big points with millennials. Start by having a weekend sale where 10% of your sales go to a popular charity, and millennials will come running.
Embrace Mobile Marketing
Approximately 85 percent of millennials in the United States have smartphones and are using them for browsing the web and checking social media. This is likely a large portion of your customer base, so you should definitely be embracing social marketing. Make sure all of your websites and blogs are mobile-friendly, including contact you through the mobile site and being able to make mobile purchases. You may need to tweak some of the media on your website in order to cater to mobile users. Make sure your load times are fast on mobile devices. You should also integrate adspace with mobile websites.
Target to Social Groups
You should also be thinking more about different social groups and lifestyles than ages. The Millennial generation is more diverse in that not all men or women of a certain age are interested in the same things. You may find a lot of 30-year-old women who are traveling the world or have high-powered careers instead of having children. This is one of many examples of how millennials are embracing alternative lifestyles. You need to narrow your target to certain social groups, such as the 20-something family man, 30-something career professional, or 40-something parent. This will help you when marketing to the right group.
Be Relevant and Creative
Millennials grew up with technology, so they know all the marketing tricks of the past. You can’t get away with simply telling a millennial what to do: they know better. Instead of just posting generic content, make sure it is creative, unique, and most importantly, relevant. Answer their biggest questions and solve their biggest problems with your content. Really study your target market to figure out what they need information on, and solve those problems with your content and products. This is going to help you cater to the millennial target market.
