A lifestyle blog is essentially one where someone writes about life. This can be anything from family and parenting, to decorating their home, talking about hobbies and passions, and sharing personal pictures. Different lifestyle blogs include different areas of interest, so it is important to understand your client when you are hired to design one of their blogs. The overall design, color scheme and theme depends largely on the blogger as an individual and what style they prefer.
Get to Know the Blogger
You really need to start by asking the blogger a series of questions, to learn more about them as a person. Find out what they hope to accomplish with the blog, including what areas they will cover. Some lifestyle bloggers want to go over a little of everything, while others are more focused on DIY and handmade projects, photography and art, their family life or even their business. Ask questions that help you determine not just what they want to cover in their blog, but how they want it to look.
Color, Theme and Style
There is no right or wrong way to design a lifestyle blog, as it depends on the blogger themselves. However, there are some tips when choosing the right color, theme and style. One thing to consider is that they will most likely want a sidebar that is easy to navigate, not too large and doesn’t get in the way of their main content. They will probably update the widgets often to include advertisements, pictures and other plug-ins, so consider that when choosing what layout will be best. For the color and theme, use their main areas of focus and inspiration for the best sort of design. Parenting-style lifestyle blogs tend to favor bright and happy colors, while photography lifestyle bloggers like artistic and black and white styles.
One thing you will notice every lifestyle blog have is proper organization. They probably cover more than one category, so make sure there is good organization of the categories. Depending on the layout you choose, the categories will either be on the top of the blog just underneath the header, or on the sidebar. Make sure it is easy to find and the blog is easy for viewers to navigate.
Lifestyle bloggers also tend to use social media quite frequently, so that should be made available and easy for their viewers to find. Icons that match the blog’s color and theme is highly encouraged. Try to place these icons near the top of the blog, so they don’t have to go searching. If they don’t have many items in the sidebar yet, consider adding their live Twitter feed to encourage others to follow them there.
An important thing to remember when designing a lifestyle blog is that it should be unique and original. Don’t recycle ideas you have used for other blogs, because the lifestyle blog must reflect the blogger’s personal style and focus.
