Fall is here, which means designers are looking for the newest trends for their website and graphic design elements. The trends for Fall 2013 will be similar to what you have seen in the past year, though with a little more of an edge and relying heavily on colors, patterns and illustrations. The day of dull and boring websites, regardless of the type of business, are far behind us. Here are some trends to look forward to for this season.
Bright, Vivid Color
You have probably already begun adding more color and texture to work for your clients, and it hasn’t stopped. If anything, Fall 2013 will show even more of the bright and vibrant colors in shades like violet, emerald, jade and brilliant blue. Neutrals are definitely a thing of the past for the most part. Contrasting hues are also making a comeback, with geometric shapes and interesting illustration. Don’t be afraid to add more color to your current designs and showcase clients exactly what brilliance you can bring to even the simplest of projects.
In 2012, typography and text became the thing to do, especially with various types and sizes of fonts. This has rolled over into 2013 and remains in the fall. However, it is taking a slightly new direction with oversized text, often used in place of a website’s header. Large, drastic and bold text is going to be trending for a while. Another trend in text is that the vintage style letterpress is going to be even more popular for delivering a unique and creative message.
Typography isn’t the only thing going big in graphic design: photos and bold backgrounds are also following. One of the reasons it is so prevalent right now is because of more Internet users accessing websites from their mobile phones, tablets and generally smaller screens. This allows for more room for oversized imagery. If large text doesn’t take over the header, an image or illustration probably will. Buttons will also be oversized on web pages, but more for convenience for the mobile crowd, than for appearance.
If you have been watching the popularity of quick response (QR) codes on things like product packaging and flyers, you are already aware of the prevalence of QR codes. What you may not realize is that they are also used for websites. Anything that can be scanned by a barcode scanner can include a QR code, including through a computer screen. Expect to be adding responsive QR codes to websites in the fall.
Many website owners are choosing to veer away from having to click to the next page, and allowing infinite scrolling instead. Sites like Pinterest use this now, but even more are adding it so that users get access to more content without loading new pages. This means redesigning websites without a footer, and putting all information in the header and sidebars.
Expect a change in patterns, colors, typography and the way websites are laid out for the upcoming season.
