Being a graphic designer is an incredibly rewarding career and offers you the ability to make something outstanding for your clients. But while it allows room for being creative and adding your unique spin to designs, it also has some guidelines you should follow. Whether you call them rules, guidelines or just tips as a designer, these graphic design rules cover the basics of what you do every day. By following them, you ensure flawless results every time you create something new.
1. Simplify Your Design
It is far too easy to go a little outlandish with your designs, especially if the client is open to your suggestions. However, keep in mind that it isn’t just about making a website or other project look pretty; it needs to be functional as well. Every time you complete a project, look at your design and find elements that you can remove. This helps simplify the design so that it is attractive, but also complements the overall feel of it.
2. Be Organized
Don’t let your creative nature get in the way of practicality. Everything you do, including your daily business operations to managing client work, should be well organized. This includes the graphic design work itself. Start making proper organization a part of your daily life, workload and creative process. If a client emails you requesting you to add something to their project, you should be able to locate it instantly and make the necessary corrections without fumbling through random images and files.
3. Remember to be Consistent
Consistency is another thing you need to consider. Not only are you designing for your client, but their audience as well. If you are designing a blog template for a client whose audience is mostly tech-savvy individuals, they aren’t as interested in a design that is overly bright and colorful, like a typical e-commerce site. Keep them in mind just as much as your client, but also provide your client with the design they’re asking for.
4. Maintain the Focus
Your design work should also be focused, without unnecessary information and details. This goes hand-in-hand with having a simplistic design. Don’t include information that is repeated multiple times when it doesn’t need to be, and only draw attention to elements that require you to do so.
5. Find the Right Balance
Finally, there is an importance balance between what you see in your design and what your client is looking for. Unless you’re designing your own website, their needs should be your first priority. But this doesn’t mean you are restricted to not adding your own spin. Offering them a choice is a great way to let them see what you’re capable of, especially if you think certain design elements would enhance the project. Graphic design is a visual representation of information, so it should be attractive, engaging and efficient. Keep this in mind for each and every project.
